Black salt
description & usage
This is an artificial salt with a variegated purple - black color and the smell of burnt buffalo horns. It occurs in commerce as rocky lumps. The two following methods are given in texts of preparation.
1. Heat 1000 grams of salt petre in a pan. When molten add 500 gms. of buffalo horn chips to form a viscous mass. Add 150 gms. of common alumn and cool. Dissolve in four volumes of water. Discard sediments. Boil the solution again till viscous, allow to cool and solidify.
2. Mix 450 gms. common salt and 12.5 gms. chebulic myrobalns. Powder finely. Heat a pan and put the mixture little by little with mixing, when black, take for use.
The drug in commerce in Madras is the former. It is used in the treatment of indigestion, constipation and enlargement of liver and spleen.
