description & usage
This plant exists in different species distinguished by prefixes denoting the colour of the flowers-white, purple, etc. These species are found growing commonly in waste places throughout India, from Kashmir to Malabar. Thornapple is a short shrub. The bell shaped solitary flowers are large. Fruit is rounded green, covered with short spines. The seeds are numerous, pale brown colour.
Uses :
Dysmenorrhoea, lumbago and pleuridynia. Fever, catarrhal bronchitis, piles, rheumatic pains, eye diseases and cough.
How to Use:
Fresh leaf juice is a popular household application to subdue pain and inflammation in glandular swellings such as mumps, in ophthalmia, ear-ache, tooth-ache, to relieve pains of gout, rheumatism and to inflamed breasts. Fresh juice may be used alone or mixed with opium. The oil is also rubbed on in rheumatic and other pains of the limbs and applied also in skin diseases as pediculi, lice etc. Following are useful domestic preparations - 1. dried datura leaves, 15 grains are smoked in a pipe for relief of asthma and paroxysmal cough. 2. Take of datura leaves 1 oz. and boiling water 1 pint ; for use as a hot formentation ; in cases of dysmenorrhoea, lumbago and pleuridynia. 3. Take datura seeds 2, Mercury sulphide 1, Trikatu (compound preparation of equal parts of Pipali, Miri and Sunta) 1 and Aconite 1 part. Mix rub the whole together with lemon juice, and make a pill mass ; dose - 5 to 8 grains ; useful in fever, catarrhal bronchitis and cough.
