definitionDiphtheria - an acute infectious disease caused by Corynebacterium diphterise and its toxin, affecting the membranes of the nose, throat, or larynx, causing fever, pain, aphonia and respiratory obstruction.
Causes, Incidence and Risk Factors
Acute respiratory tract infection caused by Cornybacterium diphtheria with formation of an adherent gray membrane in the pharynx; nose, and occasional extension to larynx and it may result in the production of an exotoxica that can cause cardiac (acute circulatory failure) and neural damage (palatal palsy, peripheral neuritis). It spread by droplet infection and has an incubation period of 4 days.
