definitionFiliariasis - a chronic filarial disease, caused due to infection with Brugia malayi or wuchereria bancrofti, marked by inflammation and obstruction of the lymphatics, hypertrophy of the skin, affecting the legs and genitals.
Causes, Incidence and Risk Factors
Widely prevalent tropical disease caused by one of three filial nematodes namely W. bancroftic, B.malayi and B. timori and transmitted by mosquitoes, incubation period of 6-16 months and acute phase with episodic fever, lymphangitis and lymphadnopathy of groin, axilla mostly, orchitis, epididymitis and chronic phase within hydrocele, scrotal lymphoedema etc.
