PIPER LONGUM
description & usage
This plant is indigenous to North-Eastern and Southern India and Ceylon, and cultivated in Eastern Bengal. Its spikes are long and trailing on ground. Lower leaves are long deeply cordate with big lobes at base, upper leaves are oblong ovate. The plant grows in warm region of India and it is cultivated.
Uses:
Cough cold, asthma, hoarseness and hiccup.
How to Use:
Powdered long pepper administered with honey will relieve cough cold, asthma, hoarseness and hiccup. For catarrh and hoarseness a mixture of long pepper, long pepper root, black pepper and ginger in equal parts is a useful combination. A compound powder consisting of the same ingredients and in equal parts and called chuturushana churnam is useful in colic and flatulence besides coughs and coryza.
It was tested and found successful. Dose is 10 to 60 grs, twice a day. Both, fruit and root are much prescribed in palsy, gout, rheumatism, lumbago, etc. Root is much used as a stimulant remedy and spice. The drug is also used in snake-bite and scorpion-sting.
